TRACE - Translation and Research of Chinese Art Classical Texts Project

中国艺术理论典籍译释与研究计划

The project TRACE (Translation and Research of Chinese Art Classical Texts) is a long-term scholarly initiative centered on the study, translation, and interpretation of major texts in the Chinese artistic tradition. It arises from a longstanding scholarly problem. Compared with the translation and study of canonical Western art theory in China, as well as the translation and circulation of Chinese philosophy, history, and religious texts in the West, classical Chinese writings on art theory have received relatively little sustained translation and critical interpretation outside China. The project therefore seeks not only to address the technical problem of translating Chinese art texts into English, but also to build an international scholarly network of researchers interested in Chinese artistic knowledge. Through reliable translation, careful annotation, and historically grounded interpretation, it aims to restore these texts to an important place in discussions of world art history, comparative art theory, and global classical studies, while also helping to cultivate a new generation of outstanding young scholars.

At the current stage, the project will advance the translation and interpretation of theoretical writings in such fields as painting, garden studies, calligraphy, architecture, music, and dance. It treats translation not as a simple act of linguistic transfer, but as a form of integrated scholarship. Working from selected classical texts, the project combines textual collation and editing, terminological analysis, the study of editions and transmission, reconstruction of historical context, and theoretical interpretation. In this way, it aims gradually to produce new English translations, focused research essays, and related scholarly resources, thereby promoting the renewed circulation, understanding, and repositioning of Chinese artistic classics in the international academic sphere.

As an important component of this long-term undertaking, the Workshop on the Translation, Interpretation, and Research of Classical Texts in Chinese Art Theory is now open for applications from young scholars and doctoral students. Through close reading, translation, and discussion of classical texts, the workshop aims to bring together emerging researchers in related fields, to promote the translation and study of premodern Chinese art-theoretical writings, and to build an academic network centered on the broader goals of the project.
