Introduction
(a)About the Forum and the Theme
Peking University International Doctoral Student Forum of Art Studies (Including four parallel sessions) will be held at Peking University from 29th August to 1st September, 2019. We invite young scholars from all over the world to discuss the issues with the main theme of “Global and Local”, in the four parallel sessions of art theory, art history, film study and cultural industries, to share the latest academic achievements and exchange thoughts and ideas.
The theme of "global and local" is selected in order to encourage young scholars to think about some quintessential questions of art theory: whether the research of art history and art theory should pursue universal standards to solve all problem just because of current globalization; How to understand and deal with the regional characteristics of art theories; By liberating the methodologies of art history, do we have to face more and more confusions? Would this so-called "global art history" really exist? What is the condition and the method for us to transcend localization and access the global knowledge system? Should the studies on art history and film history follow a basic mode that has trans-regional and trans-cultural uniformity? Or should we continue to research for truly universal standards?
Is it possible to make dialogues about specific common topics between regional art theories or indifferent national, linguistic, and cultural contexts? And how these dialogues can be displayed in philosophical, artistic, social and linguistic levels? Is it true that there is an insurmountable barrier between Chinese aesthetics and western art theory? Is it true that the maintenance of local thoughts and the adherence to the concept of national art theory play a conservative role in the era of globalization? In what way that cultural heritage from different countries could enter this broad international communication? Is cultural heritage eligible for global travelling in terms of the popular concept of travelling theory currently?
We encourage young scholars to contribute their thoughts about these topics: “globalization and localization”, “grand history and regional change”, “universal value and specificity value”, “whole and part” and “open dialogue and subject boundary” and etc.
(b)About Parallel Sessions
Art Theory Session
Image and Media
Started in the 19th century, based on a series of changes in image and media from the innovation of image technology to the convergence of the media, numerous ideas and theories have emerged. The thinking and dispute about image and media formed the background of contemporary philosophy. Image is not only the product symbolizing the era of mechanical technology, whereas the history of image is as long as the history of art. Following the emergence of media archaeology, academic humanists reviewed the history of media and its impetus and modification on the historyof perception. Image is closely related to the concepts of representation, memory and symbols. Media is related to perception and technology as well. These are the topics that contemporary philosophers are most concerned about when thinking about arts.
The thinking about image and media reflects the concerns of the changing era that all human share and common people pay attention to the issues in the-context of the globalization. The interpretation and the responses, by thinkers from differet regions around the world, diversifies into the different forms of art theory with different local colors, which not only represent their placement of thinking mode, but also reveals the differentiated understanding of the present and the furture based on the western and eastern cultures.
Therefore, we take "image and the media" as the theme, about arttheories whether to be foreign or Chinese, at ancient times or at present, including: (1) a delicate and in-depth analysis about any piece of art (2) or the interpretation of cutting-edge art theories;(3) or comment on the aesthetic view of contemporary philosophers;(4) Or the sorting of visual culture or media phenomenon. We welcome young students for sincere academic exchanges and discussions from different backgrounds and at different angles. And we specially invite “Literature and ArtStudies”, “Literature and Art Theory Studies” and “Chinese Literature and ArtComment” as the academic journals to participate in the academic interactions ofthe forum, and invite domestic and international well-known experts to comment on the presentations of the speakers.
Art History Session
The Role of Art and the Power of Image
Image is an important part of the historic landscape, but it cannot be simply regarded as illustrations of a history book or visual historical materials. The information conveyed by image not only reflects those beliefs, traditions, customs or other historical information, but also focuses on the development of society and history itself, which made image a significant factor in shaping the course of history and cultivating humanity. The interactions between art and social life have created a different kind of history.
We invite graduate students of art history or any related fields to submit abstracts of paper for presentation at the 10th International Graduate Student Symposium of Art History at Peking University in Beijing this September.
Film studies Session
Artistic Tradition and Theoretical Resources of Chinese Film
For more than a century, Chinese artistic tradition has provided rich the oretical resources for theory and practice of film, but in the existing territory of world film theories, there are still inadequate Chinese original theories , universally accepted theoretical discourse or critical paradigm, nor has it formed a Chinese film genre with international influence.
In this year's International Doctoral Forum, we intend to choose the topic of artistic tradition and theoretical resources of Chinese film. In the process of returning to Chinese artistic tradition and theoretical resources, we explore the possibility of reconstructing Chinese film criticism, and let theoretical criticism of Chinese cinema continue to gain proper growing space in the global culture and in the world pattern of film.
Cultural Industries Session
Multiple Protection and Creative Inheritance of Cultural Heritage
Cultural heritage represents the identity and memory of a nation, and is also the foundation of a country's cultural development and prosperity. The rich cultural heritage of various countries in the world, which represents the local cultures with their own characteristics, together constitute the colorful chapter of human culture. However, the long-term historical development and the impact of modern consumer culture make the inheritance and development of cultural heritage in the global scope face various difficulties. One of the important missions of cultural industry is to promote the creative transformation of cultural heritage and make the ancient history and culture give out its unique charm in modern society through a variety of creative methods under the guidance of propositions such as aestheticization of daily life and according to the current situation of national social development and local conditions. Through "One Belt And One Road" and other opportunities of international cooperation and development, we will exchange experience of protection, nourish the cultural and artistic creation of contemporary society with creative inheritance, and create the future for the country and nation.
Peking University International Doctoral Student Forum of Cultural Industries is organized by Peking University Research Institute of Cultural Industries and National Cultural Industry Innovation and Development Research Centre, the forum commits to broaden the academic perspective of students through lectures from renowned scholars and seminars for academic discussion, and encourages positive academic exchange among young scholars with an establishment of academic network. We focus on the frontier issues on the development of cultural industries worldwide, aim to cultivate new ideas through academic discussions, release new vitality, and stimulate the growth of the new academic strength of the cultural industry.
